Working through something often requires that
we learn to see things in a new way. Coming to
counseling can help us identify our destructive
patterns but sometimes we need practical techniques
to break apart our old behaviors. Many times,
messages about how to deal with feelings lead
to a way of dealing with the self that is abrupt
and harsh. This teaches us to be ashamed of how
we feel, and sometimes we may not even know what
it is that we are feeling. In skills group we
will learn to pay attention to our perceptual
process, (how we see and hear things, how we feel)
and practice techniques that help us become re-aquainted
and accepting of our experience and feeling so
we can contact our true selves.
You may be thinking to yourself "that's
not my problem, all I am is feeling! My problem
is i feel too much!" However, basic perceptual
tools may help here as well. Sometimes the most
scary feelings arise from anxiety and fear from
thoughts that seem unbearable. The thought may
be existential ("I don't really exist")
or self-critical ("I'm a bad person")
or fearful ("No one really loves me").
Learning new perceptual skills to change the focus
of these thoughts is empowering and fulfilling.
Feeling like we have the strength to get through
distressful feelings feels strengthening. It helps
us to have control and stop battering ourselves.
It helps us know there is so much more to us.
Many groups focus on mindfulness skills as the
basic tool, and then other skills are taught specific
to different targeted moods or disorders. I also
offer a dream group, where we practice and honor
the spontaneous images from psyche as part of
our practice of being kind to ourselves. |
